Music Business Venues

Case reference FOI2019/00046

Published 30 May 2019

Request

Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, I should like to request the following information:

1. The name and address of each music venue business registered with the Council in

(a) 2010 and (b) 2017, including and identifying those open in 2010 but closed before 2017, and those not open in 2010 but opened by 2017.

2. The total annual business rate paid by each music venue in (1) in (a) 2010, and (b), 2017.

Response

You asked about music venues and the rates payable. The Valuation Office Agency provides us with the rateable values and property descriptions on which non domestic rates are based, however we do not know the actual use of the premises. For example a theatre may be used for music, theatre or exhibitions and a pub may serve extensive food and have regular music nights. We do not need this information to collect non domestic rates and it is therefore not available.

If you are interested in which properties are assessed as theatres, then this information is published on our website at https://www.guildford.gov.uk/bratesdata.
